Are you preparing for your upcoming journey, whether it's a gap year adventure, a spiritual pilgrimage to Mecca for Hajj or Umrah, or a business trip to an exotic destination? No matter where you're headed, our Travel Clinic is dedicated to safeguarding your health throughout your travels.
Why are travel vaccinations important?
Travelling to exotic countries can expose you to pathogens your body lacks protection against. We call this protection “immunity”, hence the word “immunisations”. This may lead to infection and disease, for example, Hepatitis A or Yellow Fever which will, of course, lead to illness.
In some cases, these illnesses can be very severe or even fatal. By having a vaccination, or multiple before you travel, you will develop protection against them. This is extremely important because some of these diseases are often life-threatening.
How do travel vaccines work?
Travel vaccines function similarly, offering immunity against various diseases, with many types available.
Essentially, we inject a solution into you, mimicking the invading pathogen of the disease. This process triggers your immune system to create antibodies (white blood cells) specifically designed to fight the infection. Therefore, if you ever encounter a bacteria or virus in the future, your defence system will destroy it before it can harm you.
When to get your travel vaccines
Ideally, you should receive the vaccine at least 21 days (sometimes more for others like the Rabies vaccine) before your travel to the destination. This will ensure that your body has time to produce all the antibodies needed for maximum protection.
Malaria Treatment
Malaria treatments have advanced significantly, offering effective options for combating this potentially life-threatening disease. The primary approach involves antimalarial medications, which target the Plasmodium parasites responsible for malaria. Artemisinin-based combination therapies (ACTs) are the gold standard for treating uncomplicated malaria, combining artemisinin derivatives with partner drugs to enhance efficacy and reduce resistance risk. For severe malaria, intravenous or intramuscular artesunate is the preferred treatment. Other medications may be used depending on the malaria strain and region. Additionally, preventive measures, including prophylactic antimalarials for travellers and vector control strategies, play a crucial role in reducing malaria transmission. Always consult healthcare professionals for personalised treatment plans and follow-up care to ensure the best outcomes in malaria management.
