This is one of the most varied regions to prepare for. Australia and New Zealand are low-risk destinations with excellent healthcare, and many travellers need little more than up-to-date routine boosters. The Pacific Islands, Papua New Guinea and Timor-Leste are a different picture, with dengue, typhoid, hepatitis A and — in some countries — malaria all worth planning for.

A fortnight in Melbourne and a month across Fiji, Vanuatu and PNG call for very different preparation, and we will only recommend what your trip genuinely warrants. Long-haul travel also brings its own considerations, from jet lag to blood-clot risk, which we will cover at your appointment.

Mosquito-borne, and recognised across a wider area of Australia than most people expect — parts of Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland, Western Australia, South Australia and the Northern Territory. Most cases occur December to March. Vaccination is generally considered for those living in an affected area or staying a month or more during the transmission season, so a short city break does not normally warrant it. Our pharmacists will advise honestly.

Australia and New Zealand are rabies-free, but Australian bat lyssavirus means bat exposure carries a related risk. Worth discussing if you may handle or be exposed to bats, or if your route includes Papua New Guinea or Indonesia.

Tablets — not a vaccine
Recommended for Papua New Guinea and Vanuatu. Not needed for Australia or New Zealand, or for most Pacific islands — see the malaria section below.
There is no yellow fever in Australia, New Zealand or the Pacific — this is purely an entry requirement. Australia requires a certificate if, in the six days before arriving, you have stayed overnight in a country with yellow fever risk or transited one for more than 12 hours, which commonly catches routings via Africa or South America. Your certificate becomes valid 10 days after vaccination, so plan ahead. New Zealand does not currently require proof.

Australia and New Zealand have some of the highest UV levels in the world, far stronger than UK summer sun. High-factor sunscreen, hats, shade and covering up matter here more than almost anywhere — and burn times can be very short.
Dengue in northern Queensland and across the Pacific, Japanese Encephalitis in the Torres Strait, Cape York and Papua New Guinea, and Zika in parts of the Pacific — the last being particularly important in pregnancy.
Jellyfish (including box jellyfish and irukandji in northern Australian waters), stonefish, coral cuts, sea urchins and, more rarely, snakes and spiders. Heed local warnings and beach signage, keep wounds clean, and keep tetanus cover current.
Distances are vast and medical help can be hours away in the Outback or on smaller islands. Plan medication supplies, carry a basic kit and take comprehensive travel insurance. Flights of 20+ hours also raise blood-clot risk — move regularly, stay hydrated, and ask us about compression stockings.
For Australia and New Zealand, no — there is no malaria risk in either country. It becomes a real consideration only for specific Pacific destinations.
There is malaria risk throughout Vanuatu, and in Papua New Guinea, where the most serious form is the most common. The Solomon Islands are generally also considered a malaria-risk country — our pharmacists will confirm the current position for your route. If your itinerary includes any of these, antimalarial tablets are likely to be recommended.
Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Samoa, Tonga, the Cook Islands and most other Pacific islands have no malaria risk. Dengue is the more relevant mosquito-borne concern there.
Use DEET-based repellent, cover up at dawn and dusk, and use treated nets in unscreened rooms. DEET repellents are stocked at all four branches.
